Meeting Description:

Descriptions of Discourse Markers are still scarce for European Portuguese,
when compared to those that exist for other languages, such as Spanish, French
or Italian, for example. It is therefore necessary to continue and deepen the
work that has already been done. A contrastive perspective between Portuguese
and other languages, regarding the study of discourse markers, is justified by
several reasons. The contrastive studies between Portuguese and other
languages, especially the Romance ones, have many advantages, since their
common historical origins and evolution that they frequently share provides
help in understanding the meanings and the basic functioning of the Portuguese
markers.

In addition, discourse markers are often false friends: they resemble each
other in different languages, but they differ in their uses and meanings.
Often, in these cases, there are diachronic data in which the markers had
close values and others where they diverged. In addition, the same function
can be performed by markers with different origins depending on the languages.
For this reason, the analysis of the discourse markers in translation has
heuristic value and interest from a methodological point of view. The
contrastive study of discourse markers, in comparable corpora or translations,
allowing the identification of similarities and differences, leads us to the
discovery of diachronic paths, either convergent or sometimes divergent, of
semantic-pragmatic specializations, of specific nuances of meaning and of uses
that would not be easily noticed with the study of discourse markers in only
one language. This is true for markers that look similar in different
languages, with similar functions and uses, but also when they differ.

The contrastive perspective of European Portuguese / other languages, with
regard to discourse markers, is not only concerned with translation, but also
with the teaching of foreign languages and with linguistic description in
general. It is also envisaged that work may arise that confronts European
Portuguese with Brazilian Portuguese or Brazilian Portuguese with other
languages, in the context of descriptions that take into account the
pluri-centric character of the Portuguese language. It is hoped that the
research presented will account for several levels of linguistic studies,
including Prosody, Syntax, Pragmatics, Discourse Analysis, Language History
and possible interfaces between these areas.

2nd Call for Papers:

Discourse Markers, a Contrastive Perspective between Portuguese and Other
Languages

1. Submission of Proposals and Deadlines:

Proposals for papers for a maximum of 20 minutes + 10 minutes of discussion in
one of the five languages of the colloquium: Portuguese, English, French,
Italian and Spanish. Deadline: 30 September, 2018.

Abstract (maximum 300 words, without references) must include a title, 3 to 5
keywords and a accompanied by a brief bio-note (maximum 200 words)

Submission of proposals: proposals sent by e-mail to iduarte at letras.up.pt and
rromeo at letras.up.pt

Deadline for notification of acceptance: 15 October, 2018.

2. Enrollment

After acceptance of the proposals, payment of enrollment fee must be done
online, as explained latter.

Cost of Enrollment:

Participants with communication: 70 €
Participants without communication: 50 €
Students and Professors from FLUP: gratis.
