Meeting Description:

Over the past decade, Europe has experienced various crises such as the
financial, the economic, the euro-crisis or the so-called refugee crisis,
which have led to a return of the idea of the nation-state. In that respect,
regarding e.g. the Romance-speaking countries of Europe the rise of the
Italian Movimento 5 Stelle and the Lega Nord with its current Home Secretary
Salvini, the close outcome of the presidential elections in France between Le
Pen (former Front national) and Macron in France, or the parliamentary
elections in Spain, highly influenced by the Catalonia crisis, with a huge
electoral success for Vox, give proof of this development, whilst citizens as
well as politicians (regardless of their colour) blame ''Europe'' for it.
Finally, in connection with and as a result of the recent European Parliament
elections, the concept of Europe is again up for negotiation, and the
right-wing populist parliamentary group ID (Identity and Democracy Group,
former Alliance of Peoples and Nations), whose associate parties want to give
more power to the nation-states, will take an important part in the de- and
reconstruction of this concept.
Hence, the concept of Europe is currently a burning issue. Proposals on this
matter are as manifold as diverse, reaching from a complete dismantling of the
EU to a ''refoundation of a sovereign, united and democratic Europe''
(Macron). Other concepts reappear, e.g. the idea of a ''two-speed Europe'',
which dates back to the 1980s. As before (cf. the treaties of Maastricht and
Lisbon), this competition concerning the concept of Europe will not leave EU
institutions unaffected. By emphasising the benefits ''the European idea'' has
brought to Europe after World War II and again after the collapse of the
Soviet block, politics try to find a reply towards EU-scepticism and
anti-European tendencies which have become stronger in parts of the European
societies.

Call for Papers:

With special regard to the Romance-speaking countries of Europe, their
historically rather heterogeneous starting positions and their different roles
in the formation of Europe, this conference aims at analysing discourses of
de- and reconstruction of the concept of Europe. Possible suggested questions
include (but are not limited to): How is Europe understood and legitimised by
different political actors in the Romance-speaking countries? How is Europe
conceptualised by various political bodies and institutions on the European
level and in public discourse? Who sets the agenda? How is the cultural
identity of Europe designed? How does ''the European idea'' change throughout
history and how is the re-emerging idea of nationality to be evaluated? What
is the impact of mediatisation through press, TV, radio, and social media?
In order to contribute to a better understanding of the competing concepts of
Europe, contributions are invited to discuss these and other related questions
focusing on the concept of Europe from a lexical, frame semantic,
discourse-analytic, etc. perspective.

Proposals will indicate a maximum 500 words abstract in English, German or a
Romance language (including title of the paper, author’s affiliation and
e-mail address, theoretical/analytical approach, relevance of the subject
proposed in the thematic context of the conference, 3 to 5 references) and
should be submitted to: sabine.heinemann at uni-graz.at.
