Linguistic Field(s): Sociolinguistics

Call Deadline: 30-Sep-2019

Meeting Description:

In the last decades, the linguistic interest in the languages of Mauritius has
rapidly been growing. A great deal of research on the Mauritian situation has
been carried out focusing on multilingualism and, more particularly,
communicative and symbolic practices and functions of different languages.
Another focus of research lies in sociolinguistic phenomena that have emerged
through linguistic diversity: diaglossia, contact, conflict, code-switching
and the emergence of a regional French, among others. A third group of studies
can be identified through its investigation of Mauritian creole, with special
focus on its emergence, morpho-syntax and entry into the process of
standardization and education. Our workshop will focus on language contact
(between Creole, French, English, bhojpuri, so-called ''ancestral'' and / or
''oriental'' languages, sign language) and wants to focus on ways in which the
complex situation of Mauritius can contribute to the overall discourse about
theorization and description of language contact. To do this, we bring
together researchers from various linguistic sub-disciplines, epistemological
currents, theoretical and methodological approaches. Our aim is to provide an
overview of the findings of different studies investigating Mauritian language
contact in order to identify the challenges of future research projects.
Additionally, the Conference will not only provide the opportunity to approach
central issues, but also to present and discuss ongoing projects of
researchers from different backgrounds: pioneers, advanced researchers, young
researchers, researchers from the Mauritian context and other contexts, with
an interest in language contact in Mauritius.

Call for Papers:

We invite submission of abstracts focusing on the following aspects:

- Representations and attitudes of language contact and multilingualism in
Mauritius.
- Effects of linguistic contact in linguistic productions: code-switching,
interferences, borrowing, hybridizations (in phonology, morphology, syntax,
semantics, pragmatics).
- Influences of language contact on Mauritian regional French.
- The contribution of the situation in Mauritian to the theorization of
language contact.
- Language contact manifestations in comics, songs, etc.
- Language contact in writing: linguistic landscapes, virtual communication
and social media (Facebook, WhatsApp, etc.)
- Languages and linguistic contact in the Mauritian diaspora.
- Comparison of the Mauritian situation with other contact situations (in
particular with other Creole-speaking areas).

The workshop will be held in French and English.
