From: Yi Xu [yi.xu at ucl.ac.uk]
Subject: Computational Linguistics; Phonetics: Researcher, University College London, UK

University or Organization: University College London
Department: Speech, Hearing and Phonetic Sciences
Job Location: London, United Kingdom
Web Address: http://www.homepages.ucl.ac.uk/~uclyyix/AAVL/
Job Title: Research Fellow in articulatory synthesis
Job Rank: Researcher

Specialty Areas: Computational Linguistics; Phonetics; Speech Synthesis

Description:

Duties and Responsibilities:
Applications are invited for a Research Fellow position at UCL for the project
High quality simulation of early vocal learning, funded by the Leverhulme
Trust. The project aims at improving our understanding of speech acquisition
by using computational modelling to simulate vocal learning. The modelling
will be done with a state-of-the-art articulatory synthesizer to emulate all
critical elements of the learning process, with the goal to generate highly
accurate and natural sounding speech with the learned articulatory parameters.
This is a collaborative project involving researchers from four countries, and
there will be multiple studies to assess the role and effectiveness of many
hypothetical mechanisms in the learning process. For more details, please see
project website at: www.homepages.ucl.ac.uk/~uclyyix/AAVL/

The postholder will be supervised by Professor Yi Xu. They will be responsible
for writing and executing simulation programs, running perception evaluation
experiments, performing data analysis, liaising with Co-Is and other
researchers and participating in manuscript writing.

This post is funded for 36 months, in the first instance.

Key Requirements:
The candidate is expected to have a PhD in computer science, experimental
phonetics, speech science, motor control, robotics, computational cognition,
artificial intelligence, or a related area. Applicants should demonstrate
proven ability in computational modelling and machine learning, proven ability
to analyse and write up data, experience in working with human subjects and
collaborating with other researchers. Also essential is openness to new
interdisciplinary research paradigms. Proficiency in programming languages
(such as C++ and Python), data analysis in R and shell scripting is also
desirable.
