Description:

The Department of Linguistics and Asian/Middle Eastern Languages of San Diego
State University seeks a tenure-track Professor of Linguistics at the rank of
Assistant Professor to begin fall 2020. The candidate should be an applied
linguist with expertise in the acquisition and development of second language
academic literacy. 

Potential research areas include but are not limited to: 
- Multilingual writers' composing processes, 
- The relationship of academic reading and writing, 
- Contexts (cultural, social, political, institutional) for second language
literacy, and 
- Readers' responses to second language writing. 

The candidate will teach courses at the graduate and undergraduate levels and
be an active participant in the department’s MA specialization in Applied
Linguistics/TESOL and TESL/TEFL Certificate program. Teaching areas will focus
on courses in applied linguistics but may also include other areas of
linguistics in which the candidate has expertise. The successful candidate
will oversee and administer the English for Academic Purposes (EAP)
composition program for multilingual students, a position that includes
appropriate release time from teaching. Ideally, the candidate’s research
activities will include a focus on the EAP program or lead to curricular
innovations for its diverse student population. 

A Ph.D. in Applied Linguistics, Linguistics with a Specialization in Applied
Linguistics or closely related field must be in-hand at the start of the
appointment. The successful candidate should have a track record of teaching
experience and knowledge of current trends in applied linguistics, ESL/EFL
instruction, and second language literacy. In addition, they should have a
solid knowledge base of central areas of general linguistics. The candidate
will be expected to develop and maintain an active program of scholarly
research, contribute appropriate service to the department, college, and
profession, and direct student research.
