Call for contributions to an edited volume: Study Abroad and the Second
Language Acquisition of Sociolinguistic Variation in Spanish

Editors:
Sara L. Zahler (University at Albany, SUNY - USA)
Avizia Y. Long (San José State University - USA)
Bret Linford (Grand Valley State University - USA)

Decades of research have shown that native speaker varieties of language
demonstrate systematic patterns of variation that are governed by a range of
linguistic and extralinguistic constraints. Similarly, research on second
language (L2) acquisition indicates that L2 learners' patterns of variation
are also systematic and that, as learner proficiency increases, their patterns
of variation approximate those of native speakers. Recently, L2 research in
Spanish has questioned if and how study abroad affects the development of L2
sociolinguistic variation. As this body of research grows, findings indicate
that learners' patterns of sociolinguistic variation can develop differently
from the at-home context and that their development depends on several
factors, including the structure studied, length of study abroad, type and
quantity of contact with the target language, and learner individual
differences. Given these findings, more empirical research is needed to begin
to evaluate comprehensively the impact of stay abroad on L2 sociolinguistic
variation.

The goal of this volume is to bring together original empirical research that
examines the development of L2 sociolinguistic variation in Spanish during
study abroad. In doing so, the volume aims to offer an overview of the work
already done on this topic and what remains to be investigated. We welcome all
submissions related to the L2 development of sociolinguistic variation during
study abroad, but we are particularly interested in research that addresses
the following topics:

1. Acquisition of regional variation
2. The acquisition of variation in L2 sounds abroad
3. Type of study abroad experience (e.g. service learning v. traditional
learning; homestay v. dormitory; short- v. long-term study abroad)
4. Comparison to development in learners in the at-home environment
5. Perception of sociolinguistic variation during and after study abroad
6. Learner individual differences (e.g. different L1s, heritage v.
non-heritage learners, language ideology, motivation, cognitive differences,
etc.)
7. Research that addresses more than one of the topics outlined

Proposed Schedule:
