Description:

Applications are invited for a full-time post-doctoral research fellowship in
Information Extraction at the Department of Computing Science of the
University of Alberta.  The successful candidate will work in a team focusing
on information extraction from unstructured financial data led by Drs. Barbosa
and Stroulia, in a joint project with Scotiabank. The team will develop models
and tools for extracting information from text, speech, and online resources,
including social media. 

The ideal candidate has a recent PhD in Computing Science, Computational
Linguistics, or in a closely related field, with demonstrated ability to
conduct high-quality research and publish in top-tier venues. Preference will
be given to candidates who have demonstrated experience with deploying NLP
systems to real data and with machine learning methods for one or more of:
information extraction, speech understanding, time-series data analysis,
discourse analysis, and sentiment analysis. Experience with big data
technologies will be considered an asset.

The start date is negotiable within the first quarter of 2020. The salary is
approximately CAD$60,000 per year plus benefits, and there will be funds for
travel and personal computing needs. Ability to travel for extended periods
(e.g., weeks) is required. The position is for 1 year with possibility for
renewal.

The Department of Computing Science at the University of Alberta is a world
leader in Artificial Intelligence, broadly defined, with 8 faculty members
actively working on various aspects of NLP. The University of Alberta is a
large research intensive university in Canada, home to over 31,000
undergraduate students, 7,600 graduate students, and 600 postdoctoral fellows.
