Linguistic Field(s): Cognitive Science; Discourse Analysis; Linguistic Theories; Pragmatics

Call Deadline: 10-Jan-2020

Meeting Description:

CADAAD conferences are intended to promote current directions and new
developments in cross-disciplinary critical discourse research. We welcome
papers which, from a critical-analytical perspective, deal with contemporary
social, scientific, political, economic, ecological or professional discourses
and genres. Within discourse contexts such as these, we especially welcome
papers which re-examine existing frameworks for critical discourse research
and/or which highlight and apply new methodologies sourced from anywhere
across the humanities, social and cognitive sciences.

Call for Papers:

We are pleased to announce that the deadline for 8th Conference for Critical
Approaches to Discourse Analysis across Disciplines (CADAAD) that will take
place from 6-10 July 2020 and will be hosted by the University of
Huddersfield, UK has been extended to January 10. There will be a one-day
pre-conference workshop on critical stylistic and corpus approaches to CDA on
Monday 6 July. The main conference will take place from 7 to 9 July and there
will be a post-conference excursion (see Social Programme) on 10 July for
those interested in joining us. The theme of this year’s conference is
‘Reconciling rigour and context in CDA’ and whilst we hope to receive
abstracts across the usual wide range of topics and approaches, we are asking
participants to engage with this general theme in the way that they present
their research, both in the abstract and the presentation itself. This means
in particular that the steps taken to get from data to results should be
emphasised rather than taken for granted. We hope by this means to facilitate
more discussion amongst seasoned participants about exactly how we go about
our research and about the challenges we face in making sure our work is
replicable as well as rigorous. By explicitly addressing the problems of
methodology, we also aim to make the conference accessible for scholars new to
the field, whether postgraduate research students or early career researchers.
CADAAD conferences promote current directions and new developments in
cross-disciplinary critical discourse research. We welcome papers which, from
a critical-analytical perspective, deal with contemporary social, scientific,
political, economic, or professional discourses and genres. We especially
welcome papers which (critically) re-examine existing frameworks for critical
discourse research as well as those that highlight and apply new methodologies
sourced from anywhere across the humanities, social and cognitive sciences.
There will be a series of plenary lectures at the conference from prominent
researchers in the field.

All papers will be allocated 20 minutes plus 10 minutes for questions. The
language of the conference is English. Abstracts of up to 350 words excluding
references should be submitted via the conference management system EasyChair
(https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=cadaad2020) by 10 January 2020 08:00
CET. Notification of acceptance will be communicated by 14 February 2020.
Abstracts should include research questions, a brief outline of methodology
and analytical methods, and any theoretical issues addressed, as well
describing the data analysed. Delegates may submit up to two abstracts for the
conference.
