Description:

The University of Eastern Finland, UEF, is one of the largest
multidisciplinary universities in Finland. We offer education in nearly one
hundred major subjects, and are home to approximately 15,500 students and
2,500 members of staff. We operate in Joensuu and Kuopio. In international
rankings, we are ranked among the leading universities in the world.

We are now inviting applications for an Associate Professor (Tenure Track) in
Linguistic Methodology (Digital Resources and Machine Learning) position.

This fixed-term Tenure Track position will be hosted by the School of
Humanities at the Philosophical Faculty in the Joensuu Campus. It pertains to
the university’s profile area in Cultural Encounters, Mobilities and Borders,
where the focus of research is on language and culture contacts, and
sociolinguistic variation. Other strong areas at the School of Humanities
include research addressing World Englishes, Finnish dialects and the Karelian
language, as well as language and translation technology. The position will
further strengthen the faculty’s expertise in using big data, the digital
humanities and digital methods in linguistic research.

The focus of the position is on the digital humanities and data-oriented
analysis of language resources. The appointee is expected to establish an
independent research profile strengthening the faculty’s research. The
appointee’s research profile may focus on one of the following themes: 
- Management of large data flows and creation of digital language
infrastructures, 
- Annotation of language resources, 
- Use of machine learning in linguistic research, 
- Text mining, 
- Statistical analysis of language resources, 
- Use of programming skills in linguistic research, 
- Development of visualisations of linguistic data. 

The Associate Professor will teach and supervise students, together with other
colleagues, in the international Master’s Degree Programme in Linguistic Data
Sciences, and will participate in further developing this programme. The
appointee is expected to work in collaboration with data science researchers
at the School of Computing.

A successful candidate will hold a doctoral degree in a field relevant to the
position (languages, language technology and/or linguistics) and have research
experience in the digital humanities, as well as an international publishing
record.

The following will be regarded as merits:
- Experience in the development of research environments in the field of the
digital humanities
- Proven success in the acquisition of external research funding
- Good interpersonal skills and skills to work in a multidisciplinary
environment
- Desire to establish an international research profile and skills to
participate in the development of linguistic research and the digital
humanities.

The position is intended to be filled for a four-year term starting on 1
August 2019. 

The salary of the Associate Professor position is based on level 7 of the job
requirement level chart for teaching and research staff (3,946.50
euros/month). In addition, the salary is supplemented by a personal
performance component, which can be a maximum of 50% of the job requirement
component.
