Subject: Lives in Translation Fundraiser

The Birkbeck Applied Linguistics Society at University of London is organizing
a fundraiser to support translators and interpreters in conflict zones. We
expect 'Lives in Translation' to be of interest to linguists, translators, and
interpreters as it advocates for the protection of those doing translation and
interpretation work in conflict zones.

The London event on February 20th will explore the experiences of translators
and interpreters through first-hand stories, while celebrating world languages
and cultures. However, if you aren’t able to attend, you can still support
these organizations by visiting our JustGiving page
(http://tiny.cc/donateBCALS) to contribute and find out more about the work
they do. All funds raised will go to the two charities.

The evening will feature the charity Red T, which advocates for linguists,
including literary translators, who have been incarcerated, as well as
Colleagues across Borders, an NGO that offers mental health support to
refugees working as interpreters and others affected by traumatic experiences.
Entertainment will showcase British Sign Language, as well as music and dance
from Italy, India and Japan.

Please share with anyone you think might be interested!

Date: Wednesday 20 February (7-9 pm)
Venue: Birkbeck Cinema, 43 Gordon Square, Bloomsbury, London WC1H 0PD
Tickets: http://tiny.cc/BCALS (students £10, full price £15)
