DGfS Summer School 2019 "Experimental Pragmatics: Theory – Methods – Interfaces"

Focus: The DGfS Summer School 2019 is organized by the Priority Programme 1727 "XPrag.de: New Pragmatic Theories based on Experimental Evidence (SPP 1727)", which is funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). Host of the school is the Leibniz-Centre General Linguistics (ZAS) Berlin. The school focuses on recent developments in the challenging field of Experimental Pragmatics. It deals with long-standing issues in pragmatic theory and relevant interfaces alongside new, experimental ways of addressing research questions in the field.

International leading experts in the field of Experimental Pragmatics provide
20 two-week courses and three evening lectures. Each course include 8
sessions. The language of instruction is English. The courses are assigned to
three thematic areas: Theory, Methods, and Interfaces.  

The following courses will be offered in area „Theory“: 
-Alternative sets (Clemens Mayr, U of Goettingen)
-Implicatures (Bob van Tiel, ZAS Berlin)
-Perspective (Hazel Pearson, Queen Mary U London)
-Presupposition (Philippe Schlenker, IJN Paris)
-Questions (Maribel Romero, U of Konstanz)
-Reference (Petra Schumacher, U of Cologne)
-Speech acts (Manfred Krifka, ZAS Berlin / HU Berlin)

The following courses will be offered in area „Methods“: 
-Event-related potentials as a tool in experimental pragmatics (Maria
Spychalska, U of Cologne)
-Eye tracking (Jesse Snedeker, Harvard U)
-Pragmatic language disorder (Valentina Bambini, IUSS Pavia)
-Pragmatics and semantics in language acquisition (Napoleon Katsos, Cambridge
U / Teresa Guasti, Milan Bicocca U)
-Probabilistic pragmatics (Judith Degen, Stanford U)
-Statistics with R (Nicole Gotzner, ZAS Berlin)

The following courses will be offered in area „Interfaces“: 
-Fieldwork (Judith Tonhauser, Ohio State U / U of Stuttgart)
-Gestures (Cornelia Ebert, U of Frankfurt/Main)
-Pragmatics of Language Evolution (Johann-Mattis List, MPI-SHH / U of Jena)
-Processing at the syntax-discourse interface (Lyn Frazier, U of Massachusetts
Amherst)
-Semantics, natural logic, and common sense reasoning (Guillermo del Pinal, U
of Michigan)
-Semantics-pragmatics interface (Uli Sauerland, ZAS Berlin)
-Viewing experimental pragmatics from a Cognitive Science perspective (Ira
Noveck, CNRS Institut des Sciences Cognitives – Marc Jeannerod, Lyon / Diana
Mazzarella, U of Neuchâtel)

Plenary talks will be given by Sigrid Beck (U of Tuebingen), Barbara Kaup (U
of Tuebingen) and Malte Zimmermann (U of Potsdam).

Beside several social events, there will be an event which provides the
opportunity to present own research.

The German Linguistic Society (DGfS) is pleased to be able to offer 10 travel grants of 300,- Euro each.

The DGfS is pleased to be able to offer 10 travel grants of 300,- Euro each. Preference will be given to highly motivated students who do not have access to alternative financial support for participation. To apply, you need to

1. fill out the application form (see website)
2. include a letter of motivation (max. 500 words)
3. include a CV

and send everything in one single pdf-document to xprag.de at leibniz-zas.de The application form includes a statement of endorsement, which must be signed by an endorsing faculty member who is well acquainted with the applicant (such as a thesis supervisor or lecturer). 

Please note that the grant will be paid after the participation in the summer school.
