Meeting Description:

This conference is designed to commemorate the life and work of Professor
Mervyn Coleridge Alleyne, a distinguished scholar who died on 23 November
2016, aged 83. He is one of the earliest scholars of Caribbean origin to
engage in the discipline of Linguistics and has made original and valuable
contributions to that discipline as well as to a range of others associated
with the study of the Caribbean. The conference will take place at the Mona
campus of The University of The West Indies, the institution with which he had
been associated practically all of his adult life. Please join us in
celebrating the work or our esteemed professor, Honorary Member of both LSA
and the Society for Caribbean Linguistics.

Mervyn Alleyne, as one of the earliest scholars of Caribbean origin to engage
in the discipline of Linguistics, aswell as the original and valuable
contribution to that discipline as well as to a range of others associated
with thestudy of the Caribbean, is worthy of commemoration. This is
particularly true at the institution with which he has been associated
practically all of his adult life, The University of the West Indies. It has
been the practice at UWI for there to be large scale international conferences
to commemorate the life and work of major scholars atUWI while still alive,
most notably his contemporaries at the institution, Rex Nettleford and Edward
Kamau Braithwaite. None was held for Mervyn, a clear indictment of us in the
discipline at UWI, since the University of Puerto Rico did hold one in his
honour during 2011. Having a series of activities culminating in a conference
would serve to associate Mervyn’s work with his academic and professional
base, UWI, and pull together the entire range of his scholarly contributions
in a form which makes it accessible to coming generations and to the world.
