Meeting Description:

Children’s literature, as any type of literature, is meant to introduce its
readers to multiple worlds, to broaden their horizons and their view about the
world providing them with information about other cultures and times, other
values and ideas, sometimes different from those who prevail in their own
societies. At the same time, children’s books exhibit a higher degree of
complexity given their many-fold objectives: on the one hand, they introduce
children into new worlds offering them not only new knowledge but also new
models of behaviour and thinking; on the other hand, they are meant to boost
their interaction with their family (parents and grandparents) and,
pedagogically speaking, their knowledge and fluency in the target language,
including their mother tongue.

The conference aims to bring together people from various disciplines
(children’s literature, linguistics, translation studies etc.) who are willing
to make a presentation on one or more of the topics below:

- Exploring cultural differences through translating children’s literature
- Strategies of domesticating and/or preserving foreign cultural elements in
translating children’s literature
- Pedagogics of children’s literature
- The ludic function of the language in children’s literature and its
difficulties in translation
- Intra- and interlinguistic retranslation in children’s literature
- The issue of political correctness in children’s literature
- Translating comics and picture books
- The translation of children’s literature intended for reading aloud
- Translation of children’s literature as a process of rereading and rewriting
- Faithfulness to the style and the time of the original writing
- The role of the institutions and of the mediators in children’s literature
translation
- Ethical issues in translating children’s literature
- Language and images in textbooks for children

The conference mainly focuses on, but is by no means limited to translating
children's literature from and into Romanian. Nevertheless, presentations on
translation experiences from and into other languages are also most welcome,
given the fact that the overarching objective of the annual editions of the
present conference is a better positioning and knowledge of Romanian culture,
literature and language abroad, integrated within and connected to the whole
world.

The conference will be preceded by a Workshop on translating children’s
literature (29 May 2019) in which the invited writers of stories for children
and their translators will meet and share their experience. The students in
Translation Romanian – Portuguese will also organize sessions on translation
and theatre for children in Romanian and Portuguese.
