Meeting Description:

64th Annual Conference of the International Linguistic Association

Centro de Estudios del Lenguaje en Sociedad (CELES), Universidad Nacional de
San Martín Buenos Aires, Argentina

May 30 - June 1, 2019

In the International Year of Indigenous Languages (proclaimed by the United
Nations), the central theme of ILA's 64th Annual Conference, ''language and
territory,'' will explore the current debates around local, national and
global languages and literacies; the ways in which linguistic borders have
been defined, enforced, and inherited, but also challenged, through time, by
means of geographical, political and social justifications; and how these
practices are being re-examined today. The relationships between languages and
territories have been constructed and interrogated across social groups and
communities throughout different moments in history. In the twenty-first
century, equating languages with national identities and borders is being met
with recurrent resistance: In a world of mobile communication, social and mass
media networks, and increasing migration, transidiomatic practices demonstrate
how social identities and practices clash with the language policies and
language ideologies that remain tied to single nation-states.

The ILA invites submissions that explore connections between Language and
Territory. Topics may include (but are not limited to) the following:

- Territory, language, identity
- Language contact & language change
- Language, migration & mobility
- Digital discourses & online territories
- Language varieties & diversity
- Languages & territories across time
- Indigenous languages & language revitalization
- Literacies & writing systems
- Language & territory in literature
- Language planning & policy
- Language, power, ideology

In keeping with the ILA tradition, we also invite individual papers or posters
on other areas of linguistics.

2nd Call for Papers:

Deadline Extended to March 8, 2019

Each presentation will have 25 minutes, including time for
questions/discussion. Proposals also may be submitted for 3-hour workshops for
teachers on topics related to the teaching of language, literacy &/or
linguistics.

Guidelines for Proposals:

mailing address, & phone number must be included.

Workshops:

A presentation/rationale of about 200 words should argue for the relevance of
the theoretical/applied content in language, linguistics or literacy to be

separate CV (100 words) of the workshop leader/s indicating relevant
