Description:

The College of Arts and Letters (CAL) at Michigan State University invites
applications for a fixed-term faculty position in the Center for Language
Teaching Advancement (CeLTA). The position is a full-time, one-year academic
appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor, beginning August 16, 2019.

The Master of Arts in Foreign Language Teaching (MAFLT) is a well-established
distance-based program that educates in-service and aspiring teachers of over
a dozen foreign languages. The curriculum emphasizes SLA theory,
proficiency-based approaches, innovative technology, and interculturality in
foreign language pedagogy. Although the teaching load for this position is
entirely online, the incumbent will be expected to be an active member of the
faculty community, participate in faculty related meetings in the department,
as well as be present to deliver service related requirements.

Responsibilities Include:
- Teaching three online graduate level courses per semester (Fall, Spring). An
overview of the program requirements and course syllabi are available at

- Preparing course materials and syllabi, managing and grading all
assignments, and communicating with students promptly and regularly.
- Mentoring the development of extensive master’s projects and web-based
teaching portfolios and helping to evaluate these student outcomes.
- Supporting MAFLT program efforts in the areas of admissions, recruitment,
student professionalization, peer observation, course evaluation, etc.
- Attending faculty meetings for the MAFLT Program and CeLTA.
- Following university, program, and course policies and guidelines.

Required Degree:
Candidates must have a Ph.D. in applied linguistics, second language studies,
foreign language education, or a related field.

Desired Qualifications:
Preference will be given to applicants with experience in teaching foreign or
second languages, teaching or supervising graduate students, and using a
variety of instructional technologies. Though courses are taught in English,
proficiency in one or more languages other than English is strongly preferred.
Familiarity with North American K-12 foreign language education and experience
living and working in multiple countries are also beneficial.
