Job Location: Berlin, Germany

Job Title: Researcher for cross-linguistic corpus building and phonetics
Job Rank: Post Doc

Specialty Areas: Language Documentation; Phonetics; Text/Corpus Linguistics; Typology

Description:

The Leibniz-Zentrum Allgemeine Sprachwissenschaft (ZAS) in Berlin invites
applications for a three year postdoc position in the area of Corpus
Linguistics and Phonetics. The position is part of the joint German/French
project funded by DFG and ANR, “Cross-linguistic phonetics and morphology
using a time-aligned multilingual reference corpus built from documentation of
50 languages: Big data on small languages” (DoReCo).

DoReCo will investigate spontaneously spoken language in a diverse sample of
about 50 languages. We will focus on phonetic lengthening depending on the
nature of segments and as indicators of phrase boundaries; the French sister
project will investigate morpheme rate and number of morphemes in inter-pausal
units. This work involves the creation of a reference corpus of audio
recordings in collaboration with the original corpus creators; it is an
important goal of the project that this reference corpus is made available for
future research.

For this reason we are looking for a person with a double qualification in
corpus building / language archiving and phonetics. Please specify your past
experience in those areas, including software skills. The work will require
contact with project partners in France and in Munich, and with the creators
of original corpora; the project will have three student assistants for
support.

At ZAS, the PI of the project is Manfred Krifka in collaboration with Susanne
Fuchs. In France, the PI of the project is Frank Seifart.

The position should start March 1, 2019. It is an 80% position, pay level
TöDV E13, running for 36 months.

Please submit, with subject: “DoReCo Application”, a letter of intent that
states in particular the nature of your interest in the project and your
expertise that you could contribute, as well as an CV, in one pdf file to the
application email provided below. Please also provide names and e-mail
addresses for two persons that may be able to send letters of reference;
please do not send these letters with the first application.
ZAS is an equal opportunity employer.
