Meeting Description:

Mouloud Mammeri University of Tizi-Ouzou
Faculty of Letters and Languages
Department of English

Symposium “Cognition and Language Learning”
One-day symposium to be held on 10 February 2019, Faculty of Letters and
Languages, Mouloud Mammeri University, Tizi-Ouzou

The symposium on cognition and language learning is mainly interested in
research on the mechanisms of human cognition leading to a deeper
understanding of how the processes of thinking, problem solving, attention,
perception, and memory affect learning and lead to effective strategies that
enhance learning in educational settings. Contributions on theory and
empirical research are encouraged on all aspects of the interplay between
cognition and language learning. Case studies, experimental studies,
corpus-based studies, quantitative and qualitative analyses are all welcome.

2nd Call for Papers:

For almost two decades, the behaviourist paradigm had dominated American
psychology focusing mainly on observable behaviour, rejecting the contribution
of mental processes to learning. Afterwards, the cognitive revolution
redirected attention to human thought processes, thinking abilities and
reasoning. It has now become impossible to deny the central role of cognition
in language learning.

Our aim is to bring together specialists and researchers interested in these
research areas to discuss recent contributions to the field, and to open
debates about the part played by cognition in language learning with special
emphasis on the following issues:

- Cognitive processes involved in second/foreign language acquisition
- Effect of cognition on language comprehension and /or production
- Cognition and learners’ use of strategies
- Cognitive processes involved in the development of the four language skills
- Instantiation of conceptualisation in Learners’ oral and / or written
discourse
- Interaction between cognition and culture in figurative language
interpretation

Contributions, in either English or French, may be submitted as either oral
presentations or posters. Oral presentations will be 20 minutes in length plus
a 05-minute discussion. As for poster sessions, a suitable time will be
reserved so that poster presentations receive due attention on the part of all
the assistants. A collection of articles will then be published.

Abstracts must be submitted to:
cognitionsymposium at ummto.dz or cognitionsymposium at gmail.com

Only abstracts between 300-350 words (including 3-5 references and 3-5
keywords) will be accepted. The abstract must explicitly mention the aims or
motivation, theoretical framework, method, (expected) results and conclusions
of the contribution.
All submissions will undergo a peer-review process. Please, include the
author's name, email, phone number, affiliation, and type of contribution
(presentation or poster) in the abstract files.

Important Dates:

- 26 January 2019: Deadline for abstract submission (oral presentation and /or
