Meeting Description:

The Meeting on Language Teaching (La Rencontre sur l’enseignement des langues,
ReEL) explores various themes in contemporary second language pedagogy
relating to the teaching and learning of second and foreign languages among
adult learners. The École de langues, in collaboration with the Département de
didactique des langues, at l’Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM) invites
researchers, teachers, and pre-service teachers of all second and foreign
languages to participate.

The Meeting on Language Teaching, La Rencontre sur l’enseignement des langues
(ReEL), is a trilingual conference; presentations may be delivered in French,
English or Spanish.

Issues and Challenges of Oral Comprehension:

Oral communication is a process that involves both comprehension and
production. Many questions about oral comprehension continue to pique the
interest of researchers and teachers. How does an adult language learner’s
ability to comprehend his or her second, or even third language, develop? What
mechanisms, cognitive or otherwise, contribute to influencing how an adult
perceives speech in the language that he or she is learning? Can these same
mechanisms determine a learner’s phonological development in the L2 or the L3?
What is the effect of perception and oral comprehension on oral production? In
turn, how does oral production influence oral comprehension? Do oral and
written comprehension skills develop the same way, separately or in tandem?
What strategies, pedagogical approaches and teaching methods encourage optimal
development of oral comprehension skills during oral communication activities?
Can a focus on developing oral comprehension skills influence other language
skills, for example, vocabulary acquisition? What experimental tools and
theoretical notions should an effective language teacher consider in order to
conduct classroom research involving oral comprehension? How can a teacher
expand on the use of new technologies to support oral comprehension in
face-to-face or distance courses?

This year’s conference aims to explore these issues relating to the teaching
and learning of second and third languages and to share recent research
findings which have implications on pedagogical practices in L2 or L3
classrooms. Research topics which may contribute to this discussion, among
others, are suggested here:

- Segmentation and speech perception
- The role of working memory or selective attention in relation to oral
comprehension
- The effects of interlinguistic contact on speech perception
- Pedagogical approaches with a focus on L2 or L3 phonological development
- Pedagogical approaches with a focus on oral comprehension
- Oral communication assisted by educational technologies
- Methodology and tools for conducting research on speech perception in
teaching contexts
