About the Position:
The Department of French invites applications from candidates for a
preliminary appointment (leading to confirmation) in teaching French as a
second language at the rank of Instructor I, beginning July 1, 2019. Duties
include teaching a variety of undergraduate French language courses at all
levels, taking an active role on the committee engaged in curriculum
development and the coordination of French language programs.

About the Academic Unit:
The Department of French at Carleton University delivers programs meeting a
variety of needs and interests. They include a four-year Bachelor of Arts
(Honours) with a focus on either French Linguistics or francophone
literatures, a Combined Honours program for students interested in combining
their studies in French with another discipline, and a Bachelor of Arts
program (General) usually completed in three years. A Combined Honours program
in Journalism and French is available to students in the Bachelor of
Journalism program. Carleton also offers a popular minor in French (four
credits). We are currently engaged in redesigning our Master’s program in
French and francophone studies. The Department takes pride in offering a
personalized experience for our majors and preparing them to be autonomous and
reflective lifelong learners of French. For more information about the

Qualifications:
The successful candidate will have completed a Ph.D. at the time of
appointment. Priority will be given to candidates who hold a Ph.D. in second
language teaching and learning (applied linguistics, didactics, second
language acquisition). Candidates holding a Ph.D. in another related area,
with relevant additional academic qualifications and/or experience in French
second language teaching and learning may also be considered. The position
requires a qualified individual with a minimum of four years of experience
teaching French as a second language in a university setting, preferably to an
English-speaking student body. Native or near native fluency in French is a
requirement. Native or near native fluency in English is a further requirement
as all University communications and services are conducted in English.
Priority will be given to candidates with demonstrated experience in at least
two of the following areas: curriculum design or program coordination,
computer-assisted language learning, FSL accreditation models (preferably
CEFR).
