Meeting Description:

Assessing the language competence of multilingual individuals is a similarly
complicated undertaking. It requires test adaptation, innovation in test
design, and novel views. How do testers respond to the approaches that address
these issues? How do teachers cope with assessing multiple languages? Why is
it challenging for test designers to define constructs, and to score language
in multilingual contexts? How do immigration officials and immigrants handle
institutional language demands? How do we deal with high status languages that
dominate those of lower status in institutional contexts? And what does all
this mean for the assessment of language ability?


Call for Papers:

We do not wish to limit contributions with the few examples we have given
here; we aim to have a diverse set of approaches to the policies adopted to
solve this issue, and we therefore welcome a range of approaches for
discussion at the conference. We also welcome papers and presentations on
other topics in language assessment.

1. Research papers are 20 minutes. In addition to the discussion of results,
empirical papers should have a clear rationale and methodology. Theoretical
research papers should debate critical issues pertaining to the conference
theme. Proposals not accepted as research papers may be considered as posters
or WIPs. Each proposal for a paper (not exceeding 500 words) must be
accompanied by an abstract of 250 words.

2. Symposia address a coherent theme related to theory, research or practice,
and they are 120 minutes in length. The symposia sessions will raise issues
related to the conference theme. These sessions can include up to four
presenters, a moderator and an independent discussant. The symposium proposal
should be 500 words in length with a clear topic and objective. Titles and
abstracts of the papers of these symposia should be 250 words each.

3. Demonstrations show how technology has been innovatively applied to
assessments. This may involve new means of developing assessment; analysing
oral or written texts; understanding assessment behaviors (e.g., eye-tracking
studies), etc. Presenters should showcase their work through screen shots
and/or actual demonstrations. Demos are 20 minutes, followed by 10 minutes for
comments. The proposal of a maximum of 500 words should describe the
presentation substantive goals, and discuss any implications for language
assessment, and be accompanied by a 250-word summary.

4. Poster proposals should be 500 words in length, accompanied by an abstract
of 250 words. Posters will be displayed during the timetabled session in the
program, where presenters need to be present, discuss their work, and answer
questions. Posters are a good opportunity for those involved in test
development projects to present their contributions to language assessment.

5. Researchers currently working on ongoing research projects can submit them
as a WIPs. This session offers good opportunities to present research in
progress or research that is being planned. Presenters discuss their projects
with small groups of participants and receive comments. 
Proposals are a maximum of 500 words, accompanied by an abstract of 250 words.

Note for student presenters:  We welcome proposals from graduate students. If
your paper is accepted for a paper session or a symposium, you will be
eligible for the Robert Lado Memorial Award for Best Graduate Student Paper,
which is awarded at the end of the conference. Proposals co-authored with
faculty members are not eligible.
