Description:

Established in 1982 and having acquired an international reputation for
research, teaching and scholarship in translation, the Centre for Translation
Studies(CTS) at the University of Surrey has recently been awarded a £3.56m
Expanding Excellence in England grant to launch an ambitious new research
programme. This programme focusses on progressing and combining research on
human, technology-enhanced and automated approaches to different types of
translation written, spoken and multimodal translation. The expansion
programme includes knowledge generation and innovation activities; networking
and collaboration with academic partners and stakeholders in the Language
Services Industry; internal capacity building and external dissemination. The
Centre will work closely with internal and external partners, organise
different types of research-related activities and events, and develop various
routes to securing external funding to support the centre’s long-term
sustainability.

To support transition of our research towards technological innovation in the
field, we are seeking a full-time Technical Specialist, who will be
responsible for developing and maintaining appropriate technical
infrastructure for translation-related research, including the development of
a data repository; the collection, storage of, and access to, relevant
research data; monitoring of technological developments and identification of
future needs; and contributions to the technical planning of external funding
bids.

The post would suit someone who has experience of supporting research projects
in the area of language/translation technology, computational linguistics,
and/or natural language processing and is interested in the challenges of
working in an evolving research environment focusing on multilingual data.

You will be confident and skilled at planning and progressing technological
solutions in a research environment, using initiative and demonstrating sound
judgment, as well as having a very focused and positive attitude. Excellent
interpersonal skills and the ability to build and maintain credible
relationships with people from different academic and professional backgrounds
is a must. Experience in programming/software development and knowledge of
natural language processing tools and applications would be highly
advantageous. Experience with the use, implementation and maintenance of
translation-relevant software and tools would also be beneficial. The post
holder will report to the Director of CTS, Professor Sabine Braun.

This post is advertised as permanent, but it is linked to funding which we
currently expect to be in place until at least 31st July 2023. If further
funding is available after 31st July 2023, it is possible that the post will
be extended.
