Description:

Description
As PhD candidate in the team, you will work on the “linguistic” part of the
Synergy project, complementing our knowledge gained from intracranial EEG
recordings with a non-verbal social interaction paradigm (see Box 1 in Stolk
et al., Trends Cogn Sci, 2016). You will design and implement a live
communicative interaction task for fMRI/eyetracking and investigate what brain
regions underlie the incremental buildup of frames of reference used to
interpret verbal utterances. Widening the project’s scope to gestural
communication, you will also design a video-based task enabling us to study
when and how interlocutors process the contextual cues necessary to interpret
pointing gestures in rich interactional settings. You will then test the
causal nature of these insights by investigating how these integrative
processes are altered in individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder, as well as
employing the tasks in a TMS study with neurotypical participants.
One of the unique aspects of this project is that at all stages, your work
will build on and be informed by the results of the “non-linguistic” part of
the Synergy project (see Content description for the Postdoc position).

Requirements
You should have a Research Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Psychology,
Cognitive science, Cognitive neuroscience, or other relevant field of study.
Prior experience with neuroscience methods (fMRI, EEG, MEG or TMS) and sound
knowledge of statistics is highly valued. You should be familiar with setting
up and running experiments using presentation software (e.g. Presentation,
e-Prime) and have experience with programming in Matlab, R, or Python. Active
interest in social neuroscience or psycholinguistics, especially
pragmatics/neuropragmatics, is desirable but not mandatory. Good communication
skills in written and spoken English are essential. The successful candidate
will be able to work independently, is flexible and highly motivated. As some
of the studies will be conducted with ASD participants, we are looking for a
candidate with suitable interpersonal skills.
