University or Organization: Penn State
Department: Penn State Center for Language Science
Job Location: Pennsylvania, USA
Web Address: https://cls.la.psu.edu/
Job Title: Lab Manager/Research Assistant
Job Rank: Manager

Specialty Areas: Cognitive Science; Psycholinguistics

Description:

The Center for Language Science (CLS) at Penn State seeks candidates for the
position of Lab Manager/Research Assistant. The CLS (http://cls.psu.edu/) is
an interdisciplinary group of linguists, psycholinguists, applied linguists,
speech-language pathologists, speech scientists, and cognitive neuroscientists
who share an interest in language acquisition and bilingualism. CLS
researchers employ a variety of methods including behavioral measures, eye
tracking, electrophysiological methods (EEG/ERP), and fMRI. Responsibilities
for this position include assisting with CLS faculty research, managing the
laboratory operations (including equipment maintenance and participant
scheduling), and providing technical support for the CLS’s PIRE (Partnerships
in International Research and Education) program (https://pire.la.psu.edu/).
Skills and experience with some programs such as ELAN, E-prime, Ibex Farm,
MATLAB, Praat, Python, and R, are desirable. Training and experience with at
least one technical method (e.g. eye tracking, EEG/ERP, acoustic analysis in
Praat) is required, and knowledge of statistics is also desirable. Additional
training will be provided for technical methods, and also for the conduct of
research with human participants.

Candidates should have strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational
skills, the ability to manage multiple simultaneous projects, and a strong
curiosity and interest in language science research and methods. Typically
requires an Associate's degree or higher plus one year of related experience,
or an equivalent combination of education and experience. A Bachelor’s degree
is preferred. Knowledge of and experience working with languages other than
English is also desirable but not required. The successful candidate will have
had laboratory experience as an undergraduate, preferably with both behavioral
and cognitive neuroscience methods. This is a fixed-term appointment funded
for one year from the date of hire, with possibility of re-funding.

Interested applicants should submit:
- A cover letter,
- A CV, and
- A listing of three names of references.

The cover letter should include information about how the candidate’s research
interests align with the research being conducted at the CLS. For more
information on CLS faculty projects, visit (http://cls.psu.edu) and click on
the Research tab. Review of applications will begin immediately, and
candidates will be notified of the status of their application. Questions
about the position can be sent to Dr. Frances Blanchette (fkb1 at psu.edu). The
appointment date will be as soon as August 1, 2019 and no later than September
1, 2019.

Apply online at the application link provided below.
