Description:

Amazon Alexa AI has an opportunity for a Language Data Research Manager to
lead a team in the field of spoken language understanding. In this role, you
will lead brilliant team of data linguists and language experts with a diverse
skillset. The team is responsible for data operations for supervised learning
algorithms, language expansion and localization, building data pipelines,
process improvements, and unique data analysis requests. The team works
closely with a team of analysts and Applied Scientists to provide insights and
drive improvements on speech and language applications for conversational AI.
We are looking for a leader with the ability to guide the team through
decisions regarding large-scale data operations and analysis, and their impact
on improving the customer experience.

This role requires a thought leader able to see beyond what we are doing today
and identify where we will need to be in the future, and get us there through
concrete practical steps. A successful candidate will have a broad range of
domain skills including linguistics (preferably semantics/pragmatics/discourse
analysis), data operations & data management, analytics and data science,
and/or a proven track record of achievements in Automatic Speech
Recognition/Natural Language Processing/Natural Language Understanding,

Additional responsibilities include:
- Supporting a team with multidisciplinary and talented people, requiring
management skills that enable them to thrive
- Partnering with teams across the organization to piece together data,
models, and infrastructure into a cohesive end-to-end solution
- Regular reporting on the status of development, quality, and operations to
upper-level leadership

A successful candidate will have a strong technical ability, excellent people
and project management skills, great communication skills, and a motivation to
achieve results in a fast-paced environment. They will develop and support
their own team, build customer-facing experiences, and manage their own
projects.

Basic Qualifications:
- Master’s Degree in Linguistics, Computer Science, Computational Linguists,
Data Science, or related field
- 3+ years of related work experience
- 3+ years of hands-on experiences in NLP/NLU, ML, computational linguistics,
data science, or related field
- 3+ years experience building/leading technical teams
- 3+ years experience working with language-specific technologies

Preferred Qualifications:
- PhD in Linguistics, Computer Science, Computational Linguists, Data Science,
or related field
- Strong technical and analytical aptitude.
- Practical knowledge of data processing needs and trade-offs
- Track record of developing the skills and trajectories of talented and
motivated people.
- Project management experience for working on cross-functional projects
- Excellent written and verbal technical communication.
- Able to explain complex solutions in easy-to-understand terms.
- Comfortable working in a fast paced, highly collaborative, dynamic work
environment
- Ability to think creatively and solve problems
- Exceptional level of organization
