Call Deadline: 29-Feb-2020

Meeting Description:

The Laboratory of Modern Greek Dialects of the University of Patras, the
Laboratory for Greek Dialectology of the Ohio State University
(https://u.osu.edu/greekdialectology/) and the Tsakonian Archives of the
Community of Leonidio (http://www.tsakonianarchives.gr) are pleased to
announce the 9th International Conference on Modern Greek Dialects and
Linguistic Theory (MGDLT9), which will be held on September 18-20, 2020, at
the Conference and Cultural Centre of Leonidio, the capital of Tsakonian land.

As opposed to other languages (e.g. Romance) and their dialects, Modern Greek
dialects are less known among linguists, yet these dialects exhibit a
bewildering variety of phenomena due to the fact that many of them have
developed in relative isolation (e.g. Tsakonian) or in contact-situations with
other dialects and/or other languages (e.g. Grekanico). Modern Greek dialects
offer a plethora of interesting or even intriguing data which can be used to
test working hypotheses about language structure and language use and can be
analyzed in different ways, by appealing to various methods and theories
developed in modern linguistics.

The aim of MGDLT is to highlight the importance of Modern Greek dialects for
linguistic theory, promote the study of dialectal variation and contribute to
the preservation of Greek linguistic heritage. In this context, on September
18, 2020, the conference will host a special theme section on Tsakonian, the
only Modern Greek dialect to originate from the Ancient Greek Doric dialect.

Call for Papers:

We invite abstracts for 33 oral papers and 15 posters presenting data and
theory on Modern Greek dialects, including Tsakonian, in the areas of
phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics, discourse
analysis, psycholinguistics, sociolinguistics, historical linguistics, and
contact linguistics. Abstracts should be of a maximum of 500 words
(bibliography excluded) in English or Greek. Each author can present maximally
two papers: one single-authored and/or one joint- paper, or two joint papers.
Please, specify if the abstract is to be considered as an oral paper, a
poster, or both. The languages of the conference are English and Greek. The
deadline for abstract submission is February 29, 2020. Notifications of
acceptance will be announced by March 31, 2020.

Please, submit your abstract electronically to the Chair of the local
