Call for Papers:

This special issue of Meta will reflect on the development of corpus
translation studies as a rapidly growing, diversified field of Translation
Studies since the 1990s. It will examine the evolving identity of corpus
translation from a marginal research tactic focusing on generating numeric
corpus attributes to a powerful, and increasingly sophisticated corpus
analytical scheme and methodological paradigm which has significantly changed
and continues to shape our understanding of the research and practical, social
values of empirical translation studies. Since its inception in the 1990s,
corpus translation studies have permeated through almost every corner and
branch of contemporary translation studies - from literary translation
stylistics, through cognitive and neural translation, to more
socially-oriented translation studies, such as healthcare, environmental,
political and policy translation. Corpus methodological innovation has become
a central research aim and priority in some of the most dynamic areas of
translation studies. Methodological advancement has as its main aim a better,
enhanced understanding on the part of translation studies scholars of the
internal factors and external variables which may account for the prevalence
of certain translation features (for example, corpus textual and linguistic
patterns). Translation, especially specialised translations motivated by
pressing social, environmental and demographic issues and problems can thus be
studied in a more systematic, reliable way than ever before. As the editors of
the special issue of Meta, we envisage the emergence of a new
interdisciplinary research area 'translate-matics' in the coming decade which
lies at the crossroads of multilingual informatics, specialised translation
and sociocultural studies. That is, translation studies, as an old and young
area of inquiry will continue to offer a most fertile ground of intellectual
debates that seek to understand the intriguing, evolving nature of human
communication. 

Submission to this special issue may cover any area of translation studies,
and they should clearly align with the central aim of this special issue, i.e.
the interaction between corpus methodology and advances in theoretical and/or
specialised translation practices. Submissions which explore viable,
verifiable models of integrating quantitative and qualitative translation
analyses are especially welcome. For consideration, please send an abstract of
300-500 words providing succinct statements of 1. research aims and problems;
2. corpus analytical models/processes designed; 3. key research findings (and
research innovation if applicable); 4. significance/usefulness of your work
for future studies, and 5. acknowledgement of funding support (if applicable).

Draft full papers due: 1 July 2020 
Revision notification: 1 November 2020 
Revised full papers due: 1 April 2021 
Publication: late 2021
