Training workshop on language documentation and analysis

Focus: The workshop will involve practical hands-on training in tools and approaches to language documentation and description. A strong thematic thread running through all of the sessions will involve building awareness of variation and perceptions related to variation between closely related languages are different dialects (microvariation), as well as building awareness of variation and perceptions relating to non-standard varieties of language.
Minimum Education Level: Undergraduate


Description:
The workshop will include training on:

- Cross-linguistic structural variation, with an emphasis on morphology and
syntax
- Morphosyntactic analysis of Bantu languages
- General skills of language documentation and description, including working
with questionnaires and semi-structured interviews for data collection
- Important topics in language documentation, including community engagement,
working with your own introspection, and ethical considerations for language
documentation
- Linguistic software such as ELAN, Audacity, Praat and Flex
- Analysing data and developing hypotheses

Who can attend?
The workshop is aimed at postgraduate students and early career researchers
who are interested in documentary and descriptive linguistics, as well as
those who would like to use natural data to support their work in theoretical
linguistics.

To be considered for a travel stipend, please submit your application, along
with a one-page statement outlining your research interests and background,
and your access (or lack thereof) to alternative travel funding, together with
a letter from your supervisor or head of department via email to Dr Kristina
Riedel (riedelk at ufs.ac.za).

The workshop is organised by Dr Hannah Gibson (University of Essex) and Dr
Kristina Riedel (University of the Free State) as part of a project supported
by a British Academy Newton Scheme entitled ‘Variation in Sesotho and Setswana
as spoken in the Free State’ (#NMGR3\100036). The support of the British
Academy is gratefully acknowledged.

Tuition Explanation: The workshop, including lunch on both days (17 and 18 July) and dinner on 17
July, is free for all accepted participants. Priority will be given to
currently enrolled MA and PhD students.
