Meeting Description:

We hereby welcome you to the 9th International Scientific Conference
''Children and Languages Today'' with the topic Children and Linguistic
Identity. The conference will be held on September 12 – 14, 2019 in Osijek,
organised by the Department of Philology of the Faculty of Education in
Osijek, University of Osijek.

Children and Linguistic Identity:

Identity is very often seen as a self-explanatory or evident phenomenon, but
the question of identity is a complex one. Identity is a multidimensional
concept involving the inherited dimension (such as national and language
identity) and the selected dimension (such as one’s identity in relation to
others, or as a part of a community). In addition, the concept of identity can
refer to that of an individual, or the collective identity of a people.

2nd Call for Papers:

Our goal is to gather scientists whose research would broaden the existing
knowledge on children’s linguistic identity - its definition and development,
especially within the context of contemporary theories in (applied)
linguistics and literature. Children’s linguistic identity changes over time,
and is influenced by the historical and social changes of a child’s
surroundings. A child does not form his or her identity simply in regards to
the self, but also in relation to the identities of others. Therefore,
researchers are also invited to take an interdisciplinary approach with the
following subthemes:

1. Interrelatedness of children’s linguistic identity and multilingualism
2. Children’s linguistic identity in relation to various linguistic registers
3. Children’s linguistic identity in the context of formal
education/educational systems/ educational policies
4. Children’s linguistic identity in the context of national/ethnic/regional
identity
5. Children’s linguistic identity and the media
6. Children’s linguistic identity and cultural heritage
7. Identity in children’s and youth literature
8. Children’s linguistic identity and family environment

Since linguistic identity is not solely a linguistic issue, but can be a part
of the research of the relationship between the individual and their nation,
region, or the world, we hope that the suggested subtopics are not a
limitation to your research and will inspire you to ponder this complex and
relevant topic of the development of a child’s identity in the context of
national, European and globalisation processes.
