Call for Book Chapter Contributions:
Language learning in Anglophone countries:
Policies, rationales, practices

Background:

While the world is increasingly busy learning English, many Anglophone
countries are experiencing a lack of interest in language learning.
Consequently, monolingualism can increasingly be found among English L1
speakers in particular.

The decline in additional language learning in Anglophone countries has been
addressed many times through reporting on specific countries, but never in a
systematic and coherent manner. This book will add to the literature by taking
a cross-sectional and international perspective on the crisis in additional
language learning and its relation to global English. For this reason, we
invite chapter proposals reporting on any educational sector, in any
Anglophone country.

The book will contain mostly empirical chapters (that is, up-to-date reports)
on current language learning/policies in an Anglophone country (Section A), a
more conceptual section looking at constructions of monolingualism (Section
B), as well as a section with promising initiatives and possible solutions
(Section C).

The book will have the following sections:

- A: Language learning education policies and practices: examples of:
o current status of language education policy
o curricula, practices, systemic challenges
o trends, statistics on uptake of specific languages
o language learning in the primary sector
o language learning in the secondary sector
o language learning in the higher education sector
- B: Constructing English monolingualism in educational practice: examples of:
o monolingualism as normative educational practice
o silencing of plurilingual competencies in Anglophone classrooms
o normativity of monolingualism in meta-educational discourses (policies,
curricula, stakeholders..)
- C: Ways forward? Examples of:
o policies of plurilingual education
o plurilingual educational practices
o multilingual school settings as resources of L2
o fostering L1 and L2 language awareness
o language learning across the age span
o informal and e-language learning

How to submit book chapter proposal:

- 300-500 words excluding references
- State clearly which section your chapter would fit into, and on which
country you report
- State clearly how your contribution offers rigorous, original and
significant work
- Include 3-5 key words
- Use APA 6th edition
- Submit by 12 May to ursula.lanvers at york.ac.uk

Important dates:
Submission of book chapter proposal: 12 May 2019
Notification of acceptance for proposed book: 17 June 2019
