Description:

The Department of Linguistics at The University of British Columbia
(Vancouver) invites applications for a Lecturer position in Speech Sciences
commencing September 1, 2019.

This is a part-time position for a term of up to three years, which entails a
probationary first year. Lecturer positions are appointments without review
(i.e. non-tenure track), renewable for successive terms, subject to
availability of funds and demonstration of excellence in teaching and service,
in accordance with the Collective Agreement between UBC and the UBC Faculty
Association. The workload for the Lecturer position includes teaching plus
service. The successful candidate will be expected to teach a minimum of 18
credits of Linguistics courses at undergraduate and graduate levels.

A full-time Lecturer in the Faculty of Arts is responsible for 24 teaching
credits and service assignments, based on a 3-3 load in the Winter sessions
and 2 courses in the Summer sessions. For the 2019-2020 year, this position is
expected to teach 18 credits, based on a 2-3 load in the Winter session, and 1
course in a Summer session.

Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Linguistics or a closely related field, and
are expected to demonstrate a record of or strong potential for high-quality
teaching at the graduate and undergraduate levels. Experience teaching
statistical methods for Linguistics is strongly preferred. Successful
applicants must provide evidence of excellent teaching ability and a strong
track record of full participation in team work and program affairs. Training
and experience in computer-assisted teaching, community-based learning,
student-centered learning, task-based instruction, and curriculum development
is an asset. The successful candidates will be expected to maintain an
excellent record of teaching, active engagement in professional development
and curriculum design/development of teaching materials, as well as fully
participate in department affairs and service.

The ideal candidate should be able to teach introductory or general
linguistics courses as well as undergraduate and graduate courses in at least
two of the three following areas:
- Phonetics and speech sciences,
- Statistical methods for linguistics, and

Applicants are asked to provide:
- A letter of application,
- A Curriculum vitae,
- Statement of teaching philosophy,
- A one-page statement about their experience working with a diverse student
body and contributions or potential contributions to creating/advancing a
culture of equity and inclusion, and other evidence of teaching effectiveness
(max. file size 3MB per document).

Applicants should also provide the names and contact information for three
referees who could provide confidential letters of recommendation.

Review of applications will begin soon after May 3, 2019 and will continue
until the position is filled.

This position is subject to final budgetary approval. Salary will be
commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Equity and diversity are essential to academic excellence. An open and diverse
community fosters the inclusion of voices that have been underrepresented or
discouraged. We encourage applications from members of groups that have been
marginalized on any grounds enumerated under the B.C. Human Rights Code,
including sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression,
racialization, disability, political belief, religion, marital or family
status, age, and/or status as a First Nation, Métis, Inuit, or Indigenous
person.
