University or Organization: The University of British Columbia
Department: Linguistics
Job Location: Vancouver, BC, Canada
Web Address: https://linguistics.ubc.ca/
Job Title: Assistant Professor Without Review, Syntax
Job Rank: Assistant Professor

Specialty Areas: Syntax

Description:

The Department of Linguistics at The University of British Columbia
(Vancouver) invites applications for an Assistant Professor Without Review in
Syntax. The one-year appointment is expected to commence July 1, 2019.

Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Linguistics or a closely related field, with a
research specialization in syntax, and are expected to demonstrate a record of
or strong potential for high-quality research and teaching at the graduate and
undergraduate levels. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute
to teaching in our undergraduate and graduate programs and to participate in
graduate supervision. The ideal candidate should be able to teach not only
courses in syntax, but also in morphology, as well as introductory or general
linguistics courses.

We especially encourage applicants whose research involves a focus on
theoretically-informed empirical issues and involves primary data collection,
involving either fieldwork or experimental research. A research focus on
computational linguistics and/or under-studied languages are additional
assets, especially the languages of the Americas, Africa, or Asia.

The Department covers a broad range of subfields in linguistics, and
approaches these from a variety of perspectives, with particular strengths in
formal-theoretical linguistics, fieldwork, experimental linguistics and
language acquisition, and a developing research and teaching capacity in
computational linguistics. The Department is a centre for the study of the
Indigenous languages of the Americas with a particular focus on the First
Nations languages of western Canada, and has a long history of work on African
languages. See the Department website (https://www.linguistics.ubc.ca) for
further details. Candidates who can complement existing strengths in research
and teaching and make links with other units on campus are especially welcome.

Applicants are asked to provide:
- A letter of application,
- A curriculum vitae,
- Research and teaching statements (including evidence of teaching
effectiveness),
- No more than three samples of published or unpublished scholarship, along
with any additional supporting documents (max. file size 3MB per document).
- Applicants must also submit a one-page statement about your experience
working with a diverse student body and your contributions or potential
contributions to creating/advancing a culture of equity and inclusion.

Applications must be submitted online at the application link provided below.

In addition, applicants should arrange for three confidential signed letters
of recommendation to be sent separately by the same date to ling.admin at ubc.ca.

Review of applications will begin soon after May 3, 2019 and will continue
until the position is filled.

This position is subject to final budgetary approval. Salary will be
commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Equity and diversity are essential to academic excellence. An open and diverse
community fosters the inclusion of voices that have been underrepresented or
discouraged. We encourage applications from members of groups that have been
marginalized on any grounds enumerated under the B.C. Human Rights Code,
including sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression,
racialization, disability, political belief, religion, marital or family
status, age, and/or status as a First Nation, Métis, Inuit, or Indigenous
person.
