Focus: The Helsinki Summer School course on English as a lingua franca and multilingualism approaches the topic of English as a ligua franca (ELF) within the framework of multilingualism.
Minimum Education Level: BA


Special Qualifications:
The course is suitable for students who are currently planning or already conducting their master’s studies, as well as doctoral students and language professionals who have an interest in ELF and multilingualism.


Description:
We will consider ELF and multilingualism from various perspectives, with focus
on the multilingual repertoires of ELF users, the manifestation of
multilingualism in micro-level ELF interaction, as well as ELF and its
implications to, for instance, institutional language policies. In the course,
students will get acquainted with concepts related to ELF and multilingualism,
and importantly also get hands-on experience of working with authentic ELF
data. The course is taught by a group of experts on the course topic (incl.
Anna Mauranen, Kaisa Pietikäinen, Tiina Räisänen, Svetlana Vetchinnikova,
Hanna-Mari Pienimäki and Niina Hynninen). We look forward to receiving your
