Meeting Description:

On May 21, 2019 the University of Bologna will host the one-day workshop
“Simply not? Ways to strengthen negation”. Presentations and discussion will
revolve around pragmatically marked uses of negation, which often go under the
name of “strengthened” or “emphatic” negation. The meeting aims to reach an
improved understanding of the various semantic-pragmatic operations and
morpho-syntactic means of expression involved, and of the diachronic effects
of different types of negation strengthening.

The workshop will end with a long slot for discussion, which is in principle
available also for ''lightning talks'' by scholars who are working on this
topic and would like to participate. It would be helpful if you could write an
e-mail to the organizers in this case.

The workshop is part of the activities of CLUB - Circolo Linguistico
dell’Università di Bologna, and is jointly organized by Chiara Gianollo
(FICLIT) and Caterina Mauri (LILEC). It is partly funded by the initiative
''Dipartimenti di Eccellenza” L. 232/2016. Attendance is free.
