Meeting Description:

The International Conference on Linguistics (ICL) at Kuwait University aims to
bring together leading academics, researchers and students of Linguistics to
explore and share current research findings and scholarly contributions in the
field. Providing a much-needed forum in the region, keynote speakers,
presenters and panelists will introduce and discuss current research trends,
concerns and practical challenges in the diverse field of Linguistics. 

In line with the vast and evolving nature of the Linguistics field today, the
Department of English Language and Literature (DELL) at Kuwait University is
committed to a plural vision of linguistic inquiry, examining
interdisciplinary research in theoretical and applied linguistics. Adopting
different modes of research and analytical approaches, research in the
department has explored language structure, language in use, language
acquisition and computational linguistics, among other chief areas of
interest.  In addition to offering undergraduate studies in Linguistics and
Literature, and a minor in Translation, DELL offers three postgraduate
programs; MA and Ph.D. in Translation Studies and MA in Comparative Literary
and Cultural Studies. 

Keynote speakers:

Prof. David Crystal
  
David Crystal is an honorary Professor of linguistics. Awarded an OBE for his
services to the English language, he has authored and edited over 120 books
and published numerous scholarly articles on ELT, phonetics and phonology,
stylistics, forensic linguistics and clinical linguistics among other areas.
His most recent work has explored language and the internet. 

Prof. Elabbas Benmamoun 
 
Elabbas Benmamoun is a Professor of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies at Duke
University, USA. A syntactician and morphologist specializing in Arabic, he
has published two books and numerous refereed journal articles on functional
categories, lexical relations, and the syntax-morphology interface. He also
conducts research on Arabic spoken as a heritage language by second-generation
Arab Americans. 

There will be special sessions on language and technology, and computational
linguistics. Two guests of honor will lead these sessions; SAKHR founder:
Mohammad Al-Sharekh, Chairman of Kuwait's SAKHR Software Company, and WSIS
prizes 2017 winner: Dr. Salah Al-Najim, Professor of computational linguistics
at Kuwait University.  

Languages of the Conference:

Although English will be the main medium of presentation, applicants are
welcome to submit abstracts of research findings in Arabic and/or French.


Call for Papers:

Abstracts format and submission guidelines:

Abstracts are to be submitted online to KU-ICL at Arts.ku.edu.kw. Authors may
submit the pdf's of up to two abstracts. Applicants should indicate their
presentation preference: plenary session, research presentation session (paper
presentation), workshop session, poster or virtual paper session. Abstracts
are expected to meet the following guidelines: 

- Up to 400 words (not counting references)
- Times New Roman 12 points only
- 1.5 line spacing
- 1.5 cm left and right margins 
- 2.0 cm top and bottom margins 
- Up to seven keywords 
- No tables, charts, or graphics
