Meeting Description:

The International Commission on Aspectology of the International Committee of
Slavists (ICA ICS) and Herzen State Pedagogical University of Russia supported
by the Institute for Linguistic Studies, Russian Academy of Sciences (ILS RAS)
announce the 7th International Aspectological Conference Interrelation between
Aspect and Adjacent Categories.

The conference will be hosted by Herzen State Pedagogical University of
Russia, St Petersburg, 5-8 May 2020.
Please visit the Commission’s website at
https://stl.univ-lille.fr/commission-daspectologie/ for programmes and
publications from earlier conferences organised by the International
Commission on Aspectology of the International Committee of Slavists.
The conference aims to discuss interrelation between the verb aspect and
adjacent grammatical categories. As is known, the grammatical category of
aspect in Slaviс languages has two peculiarities: (a) a highly developed
polysemy of aspectual grammemes and (b) a close interrelation between the
category of aspect and other verb categories. Thus, the discussion will focus
largely on the ambiguity of aspect.

The conference welcomes papers that discuss the non-aspectual meaning and use
of the perfective and the imperfective aspectual grammemes (temporal, modal,
discursive, etc.), and the share of the “non-aspectual” component present in
the semantics of the Slavic aspect. The latter is especially prominent in the
imperfective forms, although it is not limited to these forms only.
Another relevant area of research to be presented is the interrelation between
aspectual and non-aspectual grammemes within the system of the Slavic verb.
This area includes a range of issues, i.e. limitations in expressing some
grammemes in the context of others, semantic shifts that occur in certain
grammeme combinations, etc. Although this area of research has consistently
received attention from Slavists, nevertheless, it requires further
investigation.

Although participants are encouraged to address the issues listed above in
their conference papers, the subject matter of the conference may not be
limited solely to the aforementioned topic areas.
