Subject: Digital Humanities in Turkey (Corpus SIG)

We are two language and literature enthusiasts based in Ankara aiming to
employ corpus methods in our research. We have recently published a paper in
the Journal of English for Academic Purposes
(https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1475158519300402) where we
investigated the use of self-mention markers in the doctoral dissertations of
literature in the UK and Turkey.

Corpus is a collection of electronically stored linguistic data, either
written texts or a transcription of recorded speech (comprised of billions of
words these days), which can be used as a starting-point of linguistic
description or as a means of verifying hypotheses about language or any other
social phenomena. It is believed that language permeates the human experience
and is considered to be a window to the mind, so we think corpus approach (or
other computational methods) can help us explore the human experiences more
comprehensively.

We are willing to form a discussion group where we can meet academicians from
different fields of social science (e.g. linguistics, literature, language
teaching, psychology, sociology, philosophy, media studies etc.) with whom we
can share recent research integrating corpus approaches (or exploiting digital
tools), brainstorm new ways to use the method, and do some joint
interdisciplinary research.
