Required Language(s): English (eng)
                      German (deu)

Description:

Two PhD positions are available in the Applied English Linguistics Section at
the Department of English, University of Graz. These positions are attached to
the project Characterising Foreign Accent in First Language Attrition funded
by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF) to Professor Ineke Mennen, the Principal
Investigator (PI).

You will be working alongside the PI, a Postdoctoral Researcher, a student
assistant, and our international collaborator (Dr Robert Mayr) on the aims of
the project to characterise perceived phonetic L1 attrition, to relate it to
acoustic changes in the L1 and L2, and to determine which predictor variables
govern it.

Both positions are fixed term, for a period of three years, starting in
January 2020. One PhD position is for 75% (30 hours a week), the other for 50%
(20 hours per week). One PhD student will focus on acoustic phonetic analysis
of speech production data and specifically the acoustic correlates of phonetic
L1 attrition. The other PhD student will focus on perception of foreign accent
(in L1 and L2) and the relationship between foreign accent and the various
predictor variables.
The successful candidate will have a Master’s degree in Linguistics/Phonetics
or equivalent, with a specialization in acoustic phonetics and an outstanding
academic record, experience with Praat software, scripting and statistical
analysis of data (desirable), and an interest in L1 attrition/L2 acquisition.
You should be fluent in English (and preferably also in German) and be able to
demonstrate strong experimental and analytical skills (e.g., through an
experimental MA thesis).
You will be expected to collect and analyze data in order to address the
project’s research questions, to present findings at workshops, conferences,
and seminars, to help organize dissemination events, and to participate in the
writing of research papers arising from the project.

Please contact the PI for more information at ineke.mennen at uni-graz.at.

If you are interested in applying, please email
- A cover letter outlining your background and suitability for the post and
whether you are more interested in a focus on production or perception;
- A CV with a list of publications (where relevant); and
- A statement whether you would like to be considered for the 50% or 75%
position.

Closing date for applications: 29 November 2019

Start date of the post: 6 January 2020

Salary: 75% post €2148.40 gross/month; 50% post €1432,27 gross/month. To be
confirmed.
