Meeting Description:

Breaking Down Barriers: An Interdisciplinary Examination of Barriers in a
Globalized World

Keynote Speaker:
Dr. Lee M. Roberts, Purdue University Fort Wayne

March 6th, 2020
The University of Texas at Austin

In 2020, Germany will celebrate the 30th anniversary of a reunified nation,
but social, economic, and cultural divides remain. This issue is not unique to
Germany; barriers of identity, political affiliation and physical borders have
returned to the front pages of the world’s newspapers: in the United Kingdom,
the United States, the Koreas, and Hong Kong, among other places.

The Graduate Association of Germanic Language Students invites graduate
students to join us for our eighth biennial Graduate Student Conference of the
Department of Germanic Studies. This year’s conference focuses on breaking
down barriers in both material, linguistic, and metaphysical senses. Abstracts
from a variety of disciplines, including (but not limited to) literature,
film, art, history, linguistics, anthropology, cultural studies, gender
studies, migration studies, legal studies, political science, and geography,
are welcome.

Topics of interest include (but are not restricted to):

- geographical, political, religious, and ethnic boundaries,
- roles of barriers in literature or film,
- deconstruction of gender and sexuality,
- East and West German comparison,
- linguistic boundaries (spatial and social),
- migration movement,
- intra- and interdisciplinary distinctions, and
- discourses of inclusion/exclusion/othering.

Call for Papers:

The deadline for submission is January 8, 2020.

Abstract proposals should be no more than 250 words in length, accompanied by
a brief biography, suitable for a conference introduction, and should be
submitted to sswaas at utexas.edu.
