Language Family(ies): Semitic

Call Deadline: 31-May-2020

Meeting Description:

Following the previous Neo-Aramaic conferences in Cambridge, Jerusalem,
Warsaw, and Uppsala, the international conference on Neo-Aramaic will take
place at the National Research University Higher School of Economics (Moscow),
from 5 November to 7 November 2020. The event is organized by the Institute
for Oriental and Classical Studies.

The conference is a locus of scholarly exchange for people working on modern
Aramaic languages (North-Eastern Neo-Aramaic, Ṭuroyo/Surayt, Western
Neo-Aramaic, and Neo-Mandaic), including their history and contact with
neighbouring languages.

The theme of the conference is the verb in Aramaic. We expect papers on all
aspects – grammatical and/or lexical – of verbal systems in individual Aramaic
languages and corpora, both old/written and contemporary/oral, as well as
studies on the history of the Aramaic verb. Off-topic papers will be also
considered.

Please keep in mind that participants from most countries will require a
Russian visa.

Call for Papers:

In order to apply for funding, we have to produce a preliminary list of paper
topics. For this reason, the deadline for paper topic submission is 1 December
2019. Pending availability of funds, we may be able to cover expenses for
travel and accommodations. Priority will be given to scholars in contingent
positions, scholars who do not have dedicated research funds, and scholars
from soft-currency countries.

The deadline for abstract submission is 31 May 2020. You will be informed
whether your presentation has been accepted by 30 June 2020. Each speaker will
be given 20 minutes for presentation followed by a 10-minute discussion. If
needed, we will also set up a poster session.

Please send the paper topics and abstracts to the following email address:
aramaicconference2020 at gmail.com
