Description:

The University of Central Arkansas invites applications for the position of
Chair of the Department of Languages, Linguistics, Literatures, and Cultures
to begin July 1, 2020. The successful candidate must possess a Ph.D. in
French, Spanish, Chinese, or Linguistics (with a specialization in any area of
these disciplines), a commitment to teaching and scholarship, and demonstrated
experience in administration at the department level or above.

The department houses bachelor degree programs in Chinese, French, Spanish,
and Linguistics, as well as a minor in German and introductory and
intermediate courses in Japanese. The department also houses a master’s degree
program in Spanish and an Intensive English Program. The department is
positioned within a college that values service learning, study abroad,
interdisciplinary teaching and research, and undergraduate research.
Responsibilities include teaching and administering a department of more than
20 faculty members engaged in languages, linguistics, and intensive English
instruction.

Native- or near-native ability in Spanish, French, or Chinese is required, as
is college-level teaching experience in one of these languages or
TESOL/TESL/TEFL.

The candidate will also possess the expertise and experience necessary to
coordinate and communicate effectively with the various research and specialty
areas within our department, which include:
- Language Pedagogy;
- Linguistics (Linguistics, Applied Linguistics, TESOL/TESL/TEFL, and Second
Language Acquisition); and
- Literature, Cultural, and Civilization Studies.

Applicants must submit a letter of interest that addresses qualifications for
the position and articulates a vision for building and energizing the
department. Applicants must also include a current CV, statement of leadership
philosophy, statement of teaching philosophy, diversity statement of no more
than 500 words (see below), and three letters of recommendation.

Overall, applications should reflect dedication to academic excellence,
innovative thinking, strong interpersonal and administrative skills,
strategies for student recruitment and retention, and a record of scholarly
achievement sufficient for tenured appointment at the rank of Associate or
full Professor.
