Meeting Description:

WHITHER RELEVANCE-THEORETIC PRAGMATICS?
Panel proposal for the EPICS IX International Conference
(6-8 May 2020, Pablo de Olavide University, Seville, Spain)

Ever since relevance theory (Sperber and Wilson 1986/1995; Wilson and Sperber
2004) was first put forth more than thirty years ago, practitioners working in
this cognitive pragmatic framework have applied it to shed light on an immense
variety of linguistic elements and communicative phenomena. Their works
heavily rely on both the communicative and the cognitive principles of
relevance, as well as the model of comprehension that relevance-theoretic
pragmatics has depicted over the years as a mindreading exercise that triggers
an incredibly complex and fast process of mutual parallel adjustment of
explicit and implicit content (Carston 2002).
Over the years, research done through the lens of Sperber and Wilson’s
framework has continued both vibrantly and enthusiastically, as attested by
the many conferences and conference panels devoted to relevance theory and the
numerous insightful analyses made on the basis of its tenets. Yet, many issues
still remain unanalysed, need to be revisited or deserve further consideration
on the basis of subsequent developments. There is still much work to be done
and many research paths worth exploring certainly lie ahead.

This panel seeks to bring together papers making new proposals from a
relevance-theoretic perspective, revisiting claims made within Sperber and
Wilson’s framework, applying its postulates to analyses of different
linguistic and communicative phenomena, pointing out challenges to be faced or
suggesting new directions for further research. Moreover, this panel intends
to pay a tribute of gratitude and acknowledgement to Professor Deirdre Wilson
–undoubtedly, one of the key figures in the development of relevance theory
and one of its co-founders– who has accepted our invitation to be guest of
honour and speaker at the panel.

Call for Papers:
