Dissertation Abstract:

Speech-related technologies for the representation of prosody are increasingly
integrated in second language teaching and learning.  With the employment of
speech analysis programs Speech Analyzer and Praat, the present research
investigates the connection between the processes of EFL Algerian students’
production and perception of English intonational patterns and the extent to
which Algerian Arabic interferes in these processes. This study describes the
students’ recognition and provision of specific audio-visual feedback of the
rendered tonal categories during the third semester of second year phonetics
course, at the Department of English, University of Guelma 8 Mai 1945,
Algeria. To fulfill this objective, a Mixed Methods Research was adopted to
combine a test (N= 26), a questionnaire (N= 26), an experiment (N= 10) with
second year students, and semi-structured interviews conducted with teachers
(N= 12) of the same department. To these four main methods, a pedagogical
evaluation of signal analysis and Computer-Aided Pronunciation programs of
Pronunciation Power, Rosetta Stone, BetterAccent Tutor, RTPitch, Speech
Analyzer, and Praat has been added. The findings provide evidence that
intonation-based learning programs Speech Analyzer and Praat are beneficial in
promoting EFL learners’ comprehensibility and oral proficiency. These findings
highlight the importance of this educational tutorial that serves the intent
of our teachers and learners.
