Meeting Description:

The Sociolinguistics Symposium Committee at the University of Illinois at
Urbana-Champaign is pleased to announce the second annual Sociolinguistics
Symposium (SOSY), which will be held on 27 February 2020 in conjunction with
the 12th Annual Illinois Language and Linguistics Society Conference at the
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

SOSY is a graduate student-run symposium aimed primarily at providing graduate
and advanced undergraduate students a forum to present and discuss their
research on topics related to sociolinguistics. Following the success of last
year’s symposium on “Acts of Identity”, this year’s theme is “Rethinking
Speech Communities”. This session invites abstracts that focus on various
semiotic practices —including but not limited to codeswitching, stance-taking,
lexical choice, script choice, and phonetic variation—of meaning-making in
different modalities. We especially encourage research that explores and
(re-)conceptualizes the notion of speech community through a variety of
analytical/theoretical sociolinguistic approaches.

Plenary Speakers for SOSY 2020:

Dr. Kim Potowski (University of Illinois, Chicago)
Dr. Jenny Davis (University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign)
Dr. Atiqa Hachimi (University of Toronto, Scarborough)

We hope that you can join us for SOSY2020 at UIUC!
