Subject: Updates from Linguistics and DLI-DEL at NSF

Dear Linguists,

You may have seen the recent Dear Colleague Letter from the National Science
Foundation on “repositioning” in the Social, Behavioral, and Economic Sciences
(SBE) directorate at NSF
(https://www.nsf.gov/pubs/2019/nsf19089/nsf19089.jsp). We have received
questions, and we want to reassure the research community that the main change
for our community is that what was once called DEL now has a new name: NSF
Dynamic Language Infrastructure – NEH Documenting Endangered Languages
(DLI-DEL. NSF is very supportive of this type of work. The name change is
meant to signal the wide range of approaches and perspectives inherent in this
work and to more clearly articulate the complementary funding opportunities at
NEH and NSF. A few other programs in SBE have changed more substantively, but
none of those changes impact funding for linguistics and, in fact, some of the
changes reflect increased opportunities for researchers of language. For
instance, the new Human Networks and Data Science – Infrastructure (HNDS-I)
solicitation may be of interest to some of you and the Ethical and Responsible
Research (ER2) program reflects a broadening of funding possibilities that
could benefit language scientists. We urge you to use the Dear Colleague
Letter as a chance to familiarize yourselves with the many funding programs in
SBE.

If you would like more information about the SBE repositioning letter or have
questions for the SBE Assistant Director, Arthur Lupia, you are welcome to
participate in an upcoming webinar with Dr. Lupia. See here for a list of
webinar dates and times: https://www.nsf.gov/news/news_summ.jsp?cntn_id=299267

As a reminder, please note the following dates as the deadlines for the next
rounds of submissions for:
- Linguistics: January 15, 2020 (January 15 and July 15 annually; see
https://www.nsf.gov/funding/pgm_summ.jsp?pims_id=5408)
- Linguistics - Doctoral Dissertation Research Improvement Grants: January 15,
2020 (January 15 and July 15 annually; see
https://www.nsf.gov/funding/pgm_summ.jsp?pims_id=505033
- DLI-DEL: September 15, 2020 (September 15 annually; see
https://www.nsf.gov/funding/pgm_summ.jsp?pims_id=505705)
- DLI - Doctoral Dissertation Research Improvement Grants: Accepted anytime
(see https://www.nsf.gov/funding/pgm_summ.jsp?pims_id=505710)

For eligibility information, see the Proposal & Award Policies & Procedures
Guide at https://nsf.gov/pubs/policydocs/pappg19_1/pappg_1.jsp#IE .

We also want to take this opportunity to thank Bill Badecker and Colleen
Fitzgerald for their many years of great service to the field of linguistics.
Bill recently rotated out of his position as Program Director for Linguistics
after nine years supporting our community in that role; Colleen rotated out
this summer after four years as the dynamic Program Director for DEL. The
current Linguistics Program Directors are Joan Maling (jmaling at nsf.gov) and
Tyler Kendall (tkendall at nsf.gov), and Keren Rice (kerice at nsf.gov) is serving
as an intermittent expert to advise on the DLI-DEL competitions.

Want to help the NSF Linguistics and DLI-DEL programs? Keep your proposals
coming in! There is no better way to show your support for these programs than
to demonstrate that they are needed competitive programs that fund important
and impactful research.

Sincerely,
Joan Maling & Tyler Kendall
