Description:

The Research Area Laboratory Phonology at Leibniz-ZAS in Berlin invites
applications for a three-year PhD position in the project ''Audio-visual
prosody of whispered and semi-whispered speech'' (PROSPER) funded by the
German Research Foundation (DFG). It is a fully-funded PhD position (E13 TV-L,
65%; 65 000 euro per year). It should ideally start on January 1, 2020.

The main goal of the present project is to provide a detailed acoustic
analysis of the prosody of whispered and semi-whispered speech. The
challenging nature of this goal lies in the fact that fundamental frequency,
one of the main correlates of prosodic variation, is entirely absent in
whispered speech.

We aim to extend the studied acoustic parameter space to the gestural
dimension by taking advantage of the possibilities of motion tracking
technology and deploying computer vision algorithms for automatic extraction
of facial features. The proposed investigation paves the way for a larger
enterprise whose ultimate goal is to design algorithms which will convert
semi-whispered and whispered speech to voiced speech. Ultimately, such a
system will help relieve the daily challenges of ageing and clinical
populations suffering from ailments such as throat cancers or
neuro-degenerative diseases including Parkinson’s.

The PhD thesis will be supervised by Dr Marzena Żygis PD (PI, Leibniz ZAS,
Berlin) and Dr Hamid Sharifzadeh (Unitec Institute of Technology, Auckland).

Requirements:
The candidate should hold a Masterʼs degree in a relevant field (linguistics,
phonetics, computational linguistics, computing, or information technology).
Knowledge in phonetics, statistics, and/or facial coding system is desirable.

Please send your application including a letter of motivation, CV, copies of
academic certificates and the names of two potential referees and their email
addresses in a single pdf file to Marzena Żygis (zygis at leibniz-zas.de).
