Call Deadline: 19-Jan-2020

Meeting Description:

The Laboratory for the Typological Study of Languages at the Institute for
Linguistic Studies, Russian Academy of Sciences (St. Petersburg, Russia),
invites proposals for the international conference “Causal constructions in
the world’s languages (synchrony, diachrony, typology)” to be held on May
14-16, 2020.

The conference topic covers both clausal (I stayed at home, because it was
raining) and nominal (I stayed at home because of the rain) causal
constructions. Our main foci are the means of expressing causal relations in
the languages of the world, morphosyntactic properties of causal
constructions, as well as their semantics.
We especially welcome talks that are based on data from less studied
languages.

The topics covered at the conference include (although are not limited to) the
following:

- analysis of causal constructions in individual languages;
- morphosyntactic parameters of cross-linguistic variation in the domain of
causal constructions;
- semantic types of causal constructions;
- pragmatic properties of causal constructions;
- diachronic scenarios in the domain of causal constructions;
- the place of causal constructions among other types of complex syntactic
structures.

After a double-blind abstract evaluation procedure, the organising committee
will send notifications of acceptance or rejection to the authors by February
5, 2020.
There is no conference fee.

Invited Speakers:

Bernd Kortmann (University of Freiburg, Germany): Causal markers — typology,
dialectology, processing
Olga Pekelis (Russian State University for the Humanities, Russia): The degree
of integration or coordination-subordination scale? On the nature of
distinctions displayed by Russian causal clauses

The working languages of the conference are English and Russian.
Each talk will be alloted a 20-minute slot + 10 minutes for questions and
discussion.

Important Dates:

- deadline for abstract submission: January 19, 2020
- notifications of acceptance or rejection: February 5, 2020
- conference dates: May 14-16, 2020

Organising Committee:

N. M. Zaika (chair)
S. B. Klimenko
O. V. Kuznecova

The conference is organised by the Institute for Linguistic Studies as part of
the research project “Causal Constructions in World Languages (Semantics and
Typology)” supported by a grant from the Russian Science Foundation No.
18-18-00472.

Call for Papers:

In order to participate in the conference, authors should submit abstracts in
English or Russian to the conference email reason.constructions at gmail.com. The
abstracts in the .doc/.docx/.rtf format must be anonymized and should not
exceed 4,000 characters (excluding references). The deadline for abstract
submission is January 19, 2020. The body of the e-mail should contain the
title of the abstract, the name(s) of the author(s) and their affiliation(s).
Each author can participate in no more than two abstracts, of which no more
than one abstract can be single-authored. If you use any non-standard fonts,
you are kindly asked to attach them to your letter and to submit your abstract
