Description:

The Institute of African Studies (Fachbereich 09 Sprach- und
Kulturwissenschaften, Goethe-University Frankfurt am Main) invites
applications subject to final approval of project funds for a part-time (65
per cent) position in the LOEWE-research cluster „Minority studies: Language
and Identity“, Project C1.2 „Berber speakers in the Rhine-Main metropolitan
region: Migration, minority status and masculinity. [Berbersprecher im
Rhein-Main-Gebiet: Migration, Minoritätsstatus und Maskulinität]“ Start date:
January 1st, 2020

Junior researcher (all gender welcome)

(E13 TV-G-U, 65%-part- time)
The duration of the position is 4 years.

Our Expectations:
You are motivated to conduct research in a self-reliant way with the objective
of obtaining your PhD degree in the subject of African studies (Afrikanistik).
You are willing to assist with administrative tasks. You support our
curricular activities with regard to BA- and MA-study programmes (MA Language
and Society in Africa; in preparation: BA African Languages, Media and
Communication). The active collaboration in preparing academic publications is
also expected.

Your tasks include the extensive fieldwork activities and collection of data
working with speakers of Berber/Amazigh varieties in the Frankfurt region
(linguistic biography interviews, participant observation and recording of
linguistic data). The participation in drafting publications (jointly with
other members of the larger research cluster in a leading role) is also part
of the job.

Your Profile:
You need to have completed M.A. (or equal) level university studies in the
area of African languages or an equivalent subject (e.g. linguistic
anthropology, berberology, linguistics, cultural anthropology, Islamic studies
or gender studies). You have a good proficiency level in a Berber/Amazigh
variety. Due to the ethnographic and sociolinguistic character of the project
work, you are ready to adapt to the people among whom research will be
conducted, as well as willing to carry out participant observation and conduct
interviews in various kinds of social settings. Any earlier experience
relevant to these tasks will be considered an asset and should be indicated in
the motivation letter that you include in your job application.
