Meeting Description:

The goal of the conference is to promote both theoretical and applied research
in pragmatics, and to bring together scholars who are interested in different
subfields of pragmatics (philosophical, linguistic, cognitive, social,
intercultural, interlanguage, etc.).


Call for Papers:

The four main topical strands of the conference are as follows:

(i) Pragmatics theories: neo-Gricean approaches, relevance theory, theory of
mind, meaning, role of context, common ground, semantics-pragmatics interface,
speech act theory, im/politeness.
(ii) Experimental pragmatics: models of language and meaning, experimental
techniques, scalar implicatures, reference resolution, interpretation of
figurative language.
(iii) Intercultural, cross-cultural and societal aspects of pragmatics:
intercultural pragmatics, interlanguage pragmatics, variational pragmatics,
social pragmatics, lingua franca, computer-mediated communication, bilinguals’
language use, intercultural misunderstandings, language of aggression and
conflict.
(iv) Applications: usage and corpus-based approaches, pragmatic competence,
teachability and learnability of pragmatic skills, pragmatic variations,
developmental pragmatics, cyber pragmatics, etc.
We also invite proposals for a Panel on African American Pragmatics chaired by
Lisa Green, University of Massachusetts, Amherst.

John W. Du Bois (University of California, Santa Barbara, USA)
Elena Semino (Lancaster University, Lancaster, UK)
Maite Taboada (Simon Fraser University, Burnaby, Canada)

Abstract Submission:

Abstracts must be 250-400 words max. (including title, excluding references). 
Submissions are limited to one individual and one joint abstract per person. 
Abstracts & proposals must be submitted through EasyAbstracts
(http://linguistlist.org/easyabs/ampra2020). The system opens on November 1,
2019.  
When submitting the abstract or proposal, please specify your preference of
format as well as the strand. Presentation Formats:
Panels: Panel organizers are to send their proposal (max. 400 words) with a
list of possible participants to the conference committee. Panel sessions will
be scheduled for two time-slots (2x90 minutes).  

Roundtables:

Organizers can invite up to 6 scholars to discuss one or more issues in any
subfield of pragmatics. Contributions can be in different formats such as
short debate-starters, opinion-summaries, questions, etc. 

‘Traditional’ Presentations:
Papers submitted for this format must present the results of a research
project. (30 minutes including discussion time).

Short Presentations:
Papers submitted for this format must be statement papers, work-in progress
papers or opinion papers. (20 minutes including discussion time.)

Poster Presentations:
A poster presentation is regarded as an advertisement of an on-going project. 

Abstract submission for all formats:

Early Deadline: February 15, 2020
Notification of Acceptance: March 15, 2020
Late Acceptance: June 15, 2020 
Notification of Acceptance: July 15, 2020

Conference fee:

Regular registration: $360 CAD (before August 20, 2020)
Early bird registration: $310 CAD (before May 20, 2020)
Students (with valid I.D.): $200 CAD (before May 20, 2020); $220 CAD (before
August 20, 2020)
Conference fee covers attendance to all sessions, coffee/tea breaks, welcome
reception, conference materials and kit.

AMPRA membership:

To submit an abstract for consideration, participants are not required to be
AMPRA members. However, if the abstract is accepted for presentation and the
submitter wishes to participate at the conference, s/he must be a member of
AMPRA. The membership fee, which covers membership for a period of 24 months,
is $80 for non-students, and $40 for students. 

Graduate Student Travel Award:

AMPRA will offer eight travel awards to support conference travel ($500.00 USD
each) for graduate students. If you are interested in participating in the
GSTA competition, please submit abstract through EasyAbstract with the
following highlighted note preceding the text: “REQUEST for GSTA”.
