Description:

The Department of Liberal Studies at California State University San Marcos
seeks a broadly-trained teacher-scholar to fill a tenure-track position in
Linguistics at the Assistant Professor level, beginning Fall 2020. We are
looking for a scholar who can work in a strongly interdisciplinary department,
generate excitement about linguistics, and attract students to the
department’s linguistics program through innovative teaching, research, and
publication.

Minimum Qualifications:
- Ph.D. in linguistics or a related discipline (Advanced ABD candidates will
be considered, with a Ph.D. required in hand by August 2020.
- Specialization in language contact/creole studies with subspecialization(s)
in areal linguistics, typology, syntax, language variation and change,
descriptive linguistics, or quantitative methods.
- Ability to teach undergraduate syntax and research methods courses and to
develop courses in their specialization for the linguistics minor and proposed
major.
- Potential for contributing to the Liberal Studies major, which prepares
future K-8 teachers.
- Demonstrated potential for excellence in teaching.
- Evidence of (or the ability to develop and sustain) a research and
publishing agenda.

Desired/Preferred Qualifications:
Preference is given to candidates:
- Whose research is grounded in community engaged scholarship;
- Who focus on languages of Africa, Southeast Asia, E Asia, S Asia, and/or
Latin America, and the Caribbean;
- Who demonstrate or show promise for excellence in teaching both in general
education and in their areas of specialty;
- Who show promise for or evidence of publication in scholarly journals;
and/o.
- Who demonstrate intercultural competence with diverse groups in teaching,
research and/or service.

Duties:
The successful candidate will regularly offer courses in syntax and
introductory linguistics, and additional courses in their areas of interest,
and will help build the department’s linguistics program. They will also serve
the Department’s Teacher Preparation Program through courses taught for the
core curriculum or the Linguistics Depth of Study. In addition, they will
design and sustain an active and dynamic research agenda, disseminate their
research in leading journals and similar publications, and engage in service
and take on leadership positions within the department, college, university,
and discipline as appropriate.
