Description:

The Department of Spanish and Portuguese at the University of Illinois at
Urbana-Champaign is searching for a full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor
position in Hispanic Linguistics, with a focus on Spanish in the United
States, starting August 16, 2020. The ideal candidate will show evidence of a
well-defined research agenda in cultural and linguistic studies centered on
Spanish in the United States. Applicants working in any subfield of
linguistics (e.g., phonology, morphology, syntax, sociolinguistics, etc.)
whose interests focus on Spanish in the U.S. are encouraged to apply. The
ideal candidate will complement and build on existing strengths within the
department. The candidate will contribute to the intellectual missions of the
B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. programs in Spanish, as well as to interdisciplinary
concentrations such as Romance Linguistics and Second Language Acquisition and
Teacher Education (SLATE). Candidates should show evidence of excellence in
teaching and a firm commitment to student mentorship and curricular
innovation. The person appointed will be expected to promote innovative
interdisciplinary collaboration in research and/or teaching across our campus
and beyond.

A Ph.D. in Hispanic Linguistics or related field required before the starting
date of employment. Candidates with superior qualifications who will complete
all the Ph.D. requirements within the first appointment year may be appointed
at the rank of Instructor. After the Ph.D. requirement is met, the appointment
will be changed to Assistant Professor. Professional level proficiency in
Spanish and English is required. Applicants must have a strong research
record, or a promising research agenda, and demonstrated record of excellence
in teaching.

- A one-page research statement,
- A one-page teaching philosophy statement,
- A curriculum vitae,
- A one-page statement detailing how their teaching, service and/or
scholarship has contributed to the success of students from racial, ethnic,
and gender backgrounds, individuals with disabilities and other groups that
are underrepresented in your academic field. Applicants who have not yet had
the opportunity for such experience should note how their work will further
